The remakes used the Diamond and Pearl engine but included certain mechanics introduced in Crystal including the Eusine and Suicune events. The 2009 Nintendo DS remakes Pokemon HeartGold and Pokemon SoulSilver–which I still have of course–were a letter of love to fans of the original games: The Pokefinder Prehep included with them served as a replacement to the originals’ Mystery Gift function. I played it every single day since getting it until I traded it in to buy Pokemon Ruby in 2002. Pokemon Silver still stands as my most played game. I’d know: I played the original 2nd Gen games when they were released back in 1999.
The Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console release of the original Pokemon Gold, Pokemon Silver and Pokemon Crystal marks the re-release of what many STILL consider to be the best Pokemon games of all time for a variety of reasons, all of which I agree with.
